Chased Sterling Silver Hinged Box
A contained silver object defined by structure, surface, and interior space.
This hinged box is hand-formed in sterling silver and worked through chasing, building a textured surface through controlled, repeated strikes. The marks are embedded into the material, creating a surface that holds light unevenly and reveals the process of its making.
The form is compact and enclosed, opening to reveal a protected interior. The action of the hinge introduces a deliberate movement; to open, to conceal, to return, forming part of the object’s use.
Boxes of this kind have long held small, significant items: objects kept close, stored with care, or carried over time. This piece continues that tradition, offering a contemporary interpretation grounded in material and making.
The exterior surface draws from a language of carved and worked forms, echoing the marks of tools on stone and metal. In contrast, the interior remains smooth and quiet, a contained space held within a more active outer surface.
Each box is individually made, with variations in surface and form that reflect the nature of the process.
